Aldi tells shoppers to check their bank statements after customers are double-charged but refuses responsibility for anyone going into the red
Aldi customers have been shocked to discover they've been charged twice for the same shopping.
People who shopped at the supermarket on August 4 or 7 have seen a second payment taken from their accounts on August 24 for the same purchases.
"Thanks for taking an unathorised duplicate payment out of my bank just before the BH & payday. Now I'm overdrawn #broke," Rich Vincent tweeted to the shop.
The shop admitted that a technical problem was to blame, and apologised to customers.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “A processing error led to a number of our customers at some of our Midlands stores being charged again on Thursday 24 August for transactions originally made on Friday 4 and Monday 7 August. All affected customers were automatically reimbursed within 24 hours.
“We are sorry for this error and any inconvenience caused to our customers. The issue is now resolved, but if customers require any further assistance, we advise them to contact our Customer Services team."
Aldi said it has since reversed the payments, but some customers complained that the money still hasn't been returned to them.
Affected customers have been told to contact the supermarket to complain if they've been stung by overdraft or other fees as a result, including proof of the fees.
"While customers will not be charged more than the initial transaction amount made in our store, any overdrawing of your account caused by the second charge will need to be addressed with your bank directly," Aldi said replying to one complaining customer.
We haven't been able to establish just how many people were hit by double charges, but the problem is thought to be confined to a few stores, rather than nationwide.
In the meantime, customers are advised to check their statements and get in contact with the supermarket immediately if they've lost out as a result of the glitch.
