Young Woman Meets Man. They Share An Interest In Erotic Asphyxiation. Then This Happens 2 Hours Later.

A 20-year-old woman in Scotland, looking for an unusual erotic high, wound up dying only two hours after meeting a man, finding they both had an interest in erotic asphyxiation, having sex with him, and being strangled to death.

Last November 3, in the wee hours of the morning, Chloe Miazek, 20, met Mark Bruce, 32 at a bus stop in Aberdeen. Prior to the meeting, Miazek had been expelled from a nightclub for heavy drinking.

Accompanying Bruce to his apartment, the two had sex, and he choked her, reportedly so she could have a sexual high.

Instead, she died.

Prosecutor Jo McDonald said, "His explanation is he placed his hands around her neck during sexual intercourse and the evidence is consistent with that. The evidence suggests death is likely to have been quick, seconds rather than minutes. The extent of the injuries suggested not much force being used. During a medical examination the accused indicated to the doctor they had had intercourse around 3.30am and the forensic findings confirm that."

Brian McConnachie QC, arguing for the defense, pointed out that a previous partner of the deceased said she had expressed an interest in sexual asphyxiation. He added, “Her former partner always declined. I don't wish to sound like I'm suggesting she was the author of her own misfortune but it is a significant factor.”

Bruce, a support worker for an autistic man, turned himself in at the police station hours after the death.

Sexual asphyxiation involves intentionally restricting oxygen to the brain for the purpose of sexual arousal. Autoerotic asphyxiation involves strangling or suffocating oneself for the same purpose; some reports state that as many as 1,000 Americans die each year from the practice.
