Planet Fitness bans woman from gym after she complained about sharing locker room with trans man
A Leesburg, Florida, Planet Fitness gym is under fire after reportedly revoking a woman’s membership after she said she was uncomfortable with having to share a locker room with a transgender man.
What are the details?
According to a Monday report by LifeSiteNews, Liberty Counsel took on the case of a woman who only is identified as “Mrs. H,” who has alleged that she was on the receiving end of discrimination after voicing her discomfort with a trans man in the women’s locker room.
“Mrs. H,” who, according to a Thursday letter from Liberty Counsel, is a survivor of sexual assault, and felt incredibly uncomfortable with the man’s presence. The man was identified as Jordan “Ivy” Rice.
“This is not the only incident with Mr. Rice known to Planet Fitness,” a portion of the letter read. “Another woman reported that [Rice] exposed his naked body to her in the women’s locker room at this location. In another instance, [Rice] was involved in an argument with another woman over use of the tanning room. Misogynist, anti-woman harassment should have no place in Planet Fitness locations, and violates Florida law.”
The letter adds, “Planet Fitness must immediately reinstate Mrs. H’s membership, and make changes to its membership and locker room policies to prevent blatant sex-based harassment by males in the women’s lockers and restrooms.”
The letter also notes that when “Mrs. H” entered the locker room, she politely asked him to leave.
Instead of leaving, Rice reportedly “smirked” as Mrs. H and stared at her, later applying makeup in a mirror “where he had a full view of every single woman entering or exiting the shower area.”
The letter also noted that Rice reportedly remained in the locker room for “at least an hour,” as “Mrs. H” remained outside to give him the space to complete his makeup. According to the letter, “Mrs. H” feels that Rice remained in the locker room so long in order to intentionally provoke Rice.
“[Rice] was observed to have entered and exited the locker room, wearing the same clothes, and had not showered or changed,” the letter explained. “Despite a male employee observing that Mr. Rice’s behavior was ‘over the top,’ staff did not intervene and ask [Rice] to finish his business, but permitted him to monopolize the women’s locker room.”
According to the letter, Rice later called the police on “Mrs. H,” claiming that she had been the one to sexually harass him. No report was filed, however, in connection with Rice’s call to authorities.
Rice’s call to authorities can be heard here.
Anything else?
A similar incident occurred in 2015 when a Michigan Planet Fitness revoked another woman’s membership after making a similar complaint.
After the gym terminated the woman’s membership, she filed a lawsuit against the facility for breach of contract based on the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
A local judge dismissed the case, and the Michigan Court of Appeals later upheld the ruling.
