Demi Lovato Slams 'Fat-Shaming' Instagram Ad; Instagram Pulls It (3 Pics)

Instagram has pulled an ad that drew the ire of singer Demi Lovato for "fat-shaming" people.

The 26-year-old artist, who has previously spoken out about body image issues, shared a screenshot of a video game ad that popped on her Instagram feed – "Game of Sultans," Fox News reported. The ad featured two animated women, one fat and the other thin. The thin woman was labeled "pretty," while the fat woman was labeled "obese."

"Why is this fat shaming bulls--t on my feed?" Lovato said on Instagram Stories. The "Sober" singer then went on to list the inherent harm in such an ad.

“So many things wrong with this ad. 1. You can be 'pretty' at any weight," she continued. "This is absolutely harmful to anyone who is easily influenced by societal pressures put on us from the diet culture to constantly be losing weight in a world that teaches us to equate our value and worth with the way we look and especially anyone in recovery from an eating disorder. Especially when eating disorders are all about ‘control.'"

Lovato then demanded that Instagram "keep this bulls--t off mine and others' feeds who could easily be affected by this disgusting advertisement."

The singer concluded: “With how aware people are becoming of mental health and mental illnesses, I expect you guys to know better by allowing this advertisement to be allowed on your app. And shame on the game."

According to TMZ, a rep for Instagram said the ad has now been removed and apologized for approving it. "We're sorry. This ad was approved by mistake. We reviewed it again and removed it from future delivery in people's feeds," the rep said in a statement to the outlet.

Lovato has openly struggled with body image issues and her battle against an eating disorder, but she says she has made progress at accepting herself as she is.

"I was on Instagram and I started comparing myself to these Instagram models and I just thought to myself, someone needs to show my fans and anybody that's looking at my account that what you see isn't always what's real," Demi told E! News. "And so, I decided to embrace my flaws and — I don't even like to call them flaws, it's just a part of who I am — and show the world that I'm imperfect, but that's what makes me beautiful."

In 2013, Lovato told ABC News that she still suffered nightmares from being bullied as a child.

"I've spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I've never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life, afterwards," she said. "I literally didn't know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, 'Well, you're fat. I developed an eating disorder, and that's kind of what I've been dealing with ever since."

In the 2017 YouTube documentary, "Simply Complicated," Lovato said that "food is still the biggest challenge" in her life.
