Deputy sustains injuries after near-fatal police cruiser rollover. Now 2 teens are facing charges.

Deputy Philip Dean of Boyle County, Kentucky, is lucky to be alive after a horrific Sunday accident.

Dean was dispatched to investigate reports of someone throwing rocks at semitrucks on a Kentucky roadway. As he approached the scene, a rock struck Dean's cruiser and smashed through the windshield.

The rock struck Dean in the face, and he lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over several times. Dean, who sustained injuries as a result of the incident, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He later said that he initially thought he'd been shot.

Dean is expected to recover from the accident, but two teens are facing charges in connection with the crime, according to the Boyle County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's department posted about the incident on Sunday, imploring users to reach out if they had any information about the crime.

The post stated:

On Sunday, January 27th, just before 5:00 A.M., a deputy was responding to reports that someone was throwing rocks at semi-trucks along Lexington Road in the Old Bridge area.

As the deputy was traveling east on Lexington Road, a rock was thrown from a west bound vehicle as they passed. The rock went through the deputies windshield and struck the deputy in the face. The deputies vehicle left the roadway, struck several trees, then rolled over several times. The deputy sustained injuries, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored passenger car. Anyone with information is asked to call (859) 238-1220. A cash reward is being offered for information which leads to the prosecution of the offender.

Later that day, the department shared a follow-up to their original posting, revealing that two juveniles had been charged with throwing the rock that smashed Dean's windshield.

The post said:

Two juveniles have been charged with throwing the rock into the windshield of Deputy Dean's vehicle.

The entire Boyle County Sheriffs Office wishes to say thank you to everyone for their kind concerns and well wishes for Deputy Dean. He is now at home and is recovering.

According to WAVE-TV, the two teens face several charges, including assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The juveniles are being held at an Adair County, Kentucky, facility at the time of this writing.
