Conservatives POUNCE after Elizabeth Warren claims a family of 3 in the 1950s could live on $1 an hour
Claim:
2020 presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted that the minimum wage when she was a kid could support a family of 3:
Back when I was a kid, a minimum-wage job could support a family of three. Today, a full-time minimum-wage job in America won’t keep a mama and a baby out of poverty. Our movement is about making real, fundamental change to fix this.

Warren was born in 1949, so we’re talking about the 1950s when the minimum wage was $1 an hour:
$1.00 an hour supported a family of three in the 1950s?

And her comes the POUNCING!
I had to look up the minimum wage for all of the years that she could call herself "a kid". I can't imagine how (even back then) $40 a week could support a family of 3.
So I checked with my mom, who was born in '32. She says it wouldn't.

Yeah 1950s Oklahoma was just awash in wealth. Life was so much better then. Make America 1950s Oklahoma Again!

When I was a kid my single mom’s minimum wage job couldn’t support us so she got a second job — and worked hard to move up the ladder and provide for me. Now she’s a successful accountant and a self-made woman. This isn’t the govt’s problem to “fix.”

This is most certainly not true. I made $3.35 an hour, which was minimum wage in the early eighties. I could never have supported myself, let alone a family. Perhaps you meant to say this differently?

Back when you were a kid, the minimum wage had the same purchasing power as $11 an hour has today. It was never enough to support a family of three.
By the way, the poverty rate in 1964, when you were 15, was 19%. In 2017 it was 12.3%.

Back when you were a kid in OK, the fed. minimum wage was around $1. I doubt anyone was supporting a family of three. And no one is supporting a family of three on the real minimum wage, which is $0.

The minimum wage in 1960 was $1.00/hr. Adjusted for inflation, that is $8.57. Assume 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, and you get $17,825 pre-tax. Federal poverty line for 3 person households is $21,330. Add in EITC, SNAP, Section 8, etc and you're more than there.
