McConnell Savagely Trolls Dems with Video Hours After Green New Deal Vote Tanks
For the past couple months, Democrats in Congress have loudly demanded that significant action be immediately taken to address the purportedly imminent crisis of man-made climate change, specifically via the Green New Deal proposal introduced in the House by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as in the Senate by Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey.
Even though the proposal has been widely mocked on the right — and even by some moderates on the center-left — as being insanely expensive and full of impossible to achieve ideas that would utterly ruin our nation’s economy, it was nevertheless embraced by the vast majority of elected Democrats, including virtually all of the declared 2020 presidential contenders.
In a move designed to get everyone on record as to where they stood on the Green New Deal proposal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell scheduled a procedural vote on Tuesday that would start debate on the issue, yet Democrats refused to play ball.
Shockingly, given their incessant shrieks that the proposal needed to be implemented immediately, not a single senator voted in favor of it when it came time for votes to be counted — 43 Democrats voted “present” while four joined with Republicans in voting “no.”
And McConnell wasted no time in highlighting the hypocritical duplicity of his left-leaning colleagues who voted “present” with a short video posted to Twitter.
The video began with a clip of Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley leading a chant on the steps of Congress of “What do we want? The Green New Deal! When do we want it? Now!”
That was followed by a clip of 2020 candidate and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker claiming, “Our planet is in peril, and we need to be bold.”
Next up was Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, also a 2020 contender, being asked on ABC’s “The View” if the Green New Deal went “too far.” He replied, “No. You cannot go too far on the issue of climate change.”
Then there was 2020 hopeful and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who said of the Green New Deal, “I see it as a jumpstart, so I would vote yes.”
“Green New Deal — I’m in all the way,” said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, also a 2020 contender.
Up next was Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said on the Senate floor, “Climate change is an urgent crisis, an existential threat to our country and our planet.”
His words were echoed by California Sen. Kamala Harris, a top 2020 contender, who said, “Climate change is an existential threat.”
The actual sponsor of the proposal in the Senate, Markey, said on the steps of the Capitol, “We cannot deny the devastating consequences of climate change,” followed by the demand, “We must act now.”
“We have a crisis on our hands, now!” declared New York Sen. and 2020 contender Kirsten Gillibrand. “We have to rise to this challenge.”
The video concluded with Republican Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy reading the final tally for the vote on the Green New Deal.
He said, “On this vote, the ‘yeas’ are zero, the ‘nays’ are 57, and 43 senators responded ‘present.'”
This video trolling the Senate Democrats with their own words from the past couple of months by McConnell in the aftermath of their sidestepping a vote on the very proposal they have been pushing ad nauseam is simply brutal.
It drives home the point that Democrats really aren’t interested in actually implementing the Green New Deal.
Instead, they would hypocritically prefer to continue to use the issue to drive support among their base, proving just how un-serious they are about the issue.
