A Connecticut boy with Down syndrome and autism loves the American flag, so his neighbor went out of his way to make sure he could enjoy it every day
Here's some news to brighten up your day:
Finn Daly is a 6-year-old boy from West Hartford, Connecticut, and he adores the American flag. Finn, who has a combination of Down syndrome and autism, loves to spend his time staring up at the red, white, and blue, just to watch it wave.
"I think it's the movement," his father Kevin said.
"If it's moving, if the wind is blowing, he would sit there for an hour and just watch the flag go back and forth, which is kind of the beauty of Finn, too," mom Brooke added.
The Daly family enjoys taking walks with Finn around the neighborhood, where he'll stop in awe if he sees the flag.
"We're fortunate we have a lot of flags in the neighborhood, so it creates for very long and slow walks," Kevin said.
One flag in particular is Finn's favorite. It's mounted on a tree, hangs over the sidewalk, and belongs to neighbor Todd Disque. According to CBS, "Finn would make camp on that sidewalk, if you let him."
"The boy would just sit there, transfixed by the flag," Disque told CBS. "I was like, God bless America. This kid wants to look at my flag, then I'm all for it."
Disque was motivated by Finn's love for the flag to touch the Daly family with an act of kindness that melts the heart. With some wood boards and tools from his garage, Disque fashioned a little bench with the inscription, "Finn's Bench," leaving it by the tree as a surprise for the Dalys.
Now Finn has a spot to sit and admire the flag he loves so much.
"I'm crying and my daughter Rose is saying, 'Don't cry mom, it's OK, this is exciting.' Just a little overwhelming, but in a good way," Brooke said.
It was just one small act of kindness, but it meant the world to this family.
"It's such a small gesture, but things like this really restore your faith in humanity. Like, there's still good people out there that want to do kind things for no other reason than just to be kind," Brooke said.
