Chicago Mayor Has Harsh Words for Trump After 'Thugs' Tweet: 'It's Two Words: It Begins with F and Ends With You'

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Friday President Donald Trump was "encouraging people to be shot in the street" in response to Trump's Friday tweet concerning protesters in Minneapolis.

Demonstrations arose in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd, who was allegedly killed by former police officer Derek Chauvin during an arrest attempt. Video shared on social media appeared to show Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck in an attempt to detain him. Floyd can be heard to say, "I can't breathe." After Floyd's death, protesters took to the streets. Thursday evening the demonstrations turned into riots with widespread looting, confrontations between police and demonstrators and the burning of a police precinct building.

Trump referred to the demonstrators as "THUGS" in a tweet and said, "When the looting starts, the shooting starts." The tweet was flagged by Twitter and placed behind a warning that it "glorifies violence."

Mayor Lightfoot said Trump was "using his bully pulpit to foment violence" at a Friday briefing.

"I will code what I really want to say to Donald Trump," Lightfoot said. "It's two words. It begins with F and ends with you."

Lightfoot said Trump's goal was to "polarize, to destabilize local government and inflame racist urges. And we absolutely cannot let him prevail."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Friday that although he spoke to Trump Thursday night, he had no indication that the president would tweet about the situation in Minneapolis. Walz said Trump's tweets were "not helpful."

"The city of Minneapolis is doing everything they can," Walz said during a news briefing. "If mistakes are made and there's an accountability, we need to do that. But in the moment where we're at, in a moment that is so volatile, anything we do to add fuel to that fire is really, really challenging."

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Walz both announced weekend curfews for Minneapolis and St. Paul on Friday in an attempt to quell the demonstrations. Residents are asked to stay home from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

"It's time to rebuild our community and that starts with safety in our streets," Walz said in a Friday statement announcing the curfew hours.
The White House declined to comment for this story. President Trump addressed the demonstrations during a Friday roundtable meeting with industry leaders. "We can't allow a situation like what happened in Minneapolis to descend further into lawless anarchy and chaos and we understand that very well," Trump said.

"The family of George is entitled to justice and the people of Minneapolis are entitled to live in safety," Trump added. "Law and order will prevail."
