Family Praised for Their Honesty After Returning Bags Containing $1M in Cash

A Caroline County family is being praised for their honesty after they returned
one million dollars in cash which they found on a Sunday afternoon drive.
Emily Schantz and her family saw the car ahead of them swerving to a large bag
in the road.
Assuming the bad had trash, they took the two bags off of the ground and threw
them into their pick-up trunk totally unaware of the fact it has stacks of cash.
When Schantzes opened up the sacks she found dozens of plastic packages
which were filled with stacks of cash.
“Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies and they were addressed with
something that said ‘cash vault,’” said Schantz.
Soon after discovering the cash Schantzes called Caroline deputies and informed
them about the cash.
“They came back to Caroline, and found out they’d been riding around with almost
a million dollars in the truck,” said Maj. Scott Moser.
The Deputies who are investigating said they believe the mail bags belongs to the
postal service and that the money was meant for a bank. How the money ended
up on the side of the road still is a mystery.
Moser paid the family a visit Monday.
“For someone so honest and willing to give that almost a million dollars back, it’s
exceptional on their part,” said Moser to WTVR. “Their two sons were there, so I put
the lights on for them, but we are proud and they represented this county well by
being so honest.”
