I’m sure I’ll catch some flack for posting this. Some people will say that now is not the time to sympathize with the police. They’ll argue we should be focusing on the victims of police brutality until that gets fixed. They’ll ask me why I’m putting this guy on a pedestal for merely doing his job, which are valid points.
But I think we forget that there are innocent humans on all sides of this being swept in the vacuum of anger. Peaceful protestor or good cop, both sides are being coated with the same broad brushstrokes that label them as cruel and wrong-minded. But human beings are so complex and different from person to person. An organization as massive as the police cannot speak for the values of all of its members. And no single officer can speak for the values of an entire organization. Same goes for the protestors in the streets.
Keep fighting for change. The system is fucked and it needs to be mended. Badly. All I ask is that whether you see a Black Lives Matter sign or a police badge, please remember the human beneath the uniform.
