Michigan GOP candidate blames liberal universities for brainwashing his daughter with 'Marxist ideologies' after she told residents: 'please, for the love of god do not vote for my dad' in a viral tweet
A Republican candidate running for a seat in the Michigan state House has blamed liberal universities for brainwashing his daughter with 'Marxist ideologies' after she begged residents not to vote for him in the upcoming primary.
In a tweet that has now gone viral, Stephanie Regan, 23, urged voters not to elect dad Robert Regan, 52, a self-described 'pro-life, Constitutional Conservative'.
'If you're in michigan and 18+ pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad for state rep. tell everyone,' she said on Tuesday.
'Do a quick fb or google search to find info about his campaign. I don't feel safe rn sharing further information regarding his beliefs, but please look him up and just read for yourself,' she added in a later tweet.
Robert Regan, a Republican candidate running for Michigan's 73rd District, blamed liberal universities for his daughter's (left) public, anti-endorsement
In a tweet that has now gone viral, Stephanie Regan, 23, begged Michigan voters not to elect her dad, a pro-life, 'Constitutional Conservative'
Regan said Stephanie, who went to the University of Boulder in Colorado, was exposed to 'Marxist, socialist' beliefs on campus. He admitted the two have conflicting views on abortion, systemic racism, and the idea of white privilege
The post has since received over 180,000 likes and has been shared 37,000 times.
Her father's campaign later released a lengthy statement on Thursday responding to her anti-endorsement and supporting her right to free speech.
Robert, who is running for Michigan's 73rd District, said he felt happy Stephanie 'is confident enough in our relationship to express her opposing thoughts so publicly'.
The statement described him as the 'most conservative option in a three-way Republican primary'.
Robert later told local news station WOOD TV, his daughter's comments were a result of children being 'indoctrinated' in college 'with things that are completely polar opposite from where you raised them.
'When they go off to college, quite frankly, they get involved with these Marxist/socialist universities,' he said.
'Did it hurt me seeing that tweet? Of course it did. I'm the father, I'm human, you feel things like that, but one of the things I did with my children, all four of them, I said always focus on the truth.'
Robert revealed his younger daughter Natalie, 20, shared her sister's beliefs.
'I'm really excited that they thought they had a solid enough relationship with me where they could dis me on social media and know that I'm not going to disown them,' he added.
The House candidate was apparently not surprised by Stephanie's lack of support, admitting the two have conflicting views on abortion, systemic racism, and white privilege, according to The Hill.
He blamed 'liberal university campuses', such as the University of Colorado, the University of Texas and Austin, and Stephanie's alma mater, The University of Colorado in Boulder, for exposing her to more progressive beliefs.
'They just kind of get sucked into this Marxist, communist ideology and she and I just don't see eye to eye when it comes to the whole socialism, communism, Marxist philosophy,' he told the news outlet.
A statement released by his campaign on Thursday said Regan was 'happy that she feels confident enough in our relationship to express her opposing thoughts so publicly'
Regan is considered the 'most conservative option' in the three-way Republican primary this year
Robert said he believes his daughter was compelled to speak out against him because she's a 'big believer' in the fight against racial injustice that is currently sweeping the country.
Meanwhile, the conservative politician said he doesn't 'buy into this whole systemic racism thing at all'.
'The only place where I really see systemic racism would be the abortion clinic cause they seem to target the African American community,' he said.
Ranking their political beliefs on a 1 to 10 scale, Robert said: 'I'm like the right wing, a 10, and she's like a zero.'
Despite their opposing views, Robert said: 'I love all of my four children and only want what's best for them. We may not always agree on "what is best" but, their best, is my goal.'
The Michigan Republican primary will take place on August 4, with candidates John Inhulsen, Bryan Posthumus, Robert Regan running for office.
