Elon Musk is still backing Kanye West's 2020 bid - but thinks 2024 would be better year for the rapper to run for president

Just days after appearing to retract his support of Kanye West's presidential campaign run, Elon Musk says that he's still standing behind the rapper, but thinks 2024 may be a better year to run for president. 

The Tesla founder was one of the first to endorse West with his 'full support' after he tweeted his intention to run for US president on July 4. 

But, in the wake of a surprising interview with Forbes, in which West said, among other things, that he believes vaccines are 'the mark of the beast' and that 'Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work,' Musk appeared to have reservations about supporting West's presidential run.

Shortly after West tweeted, Musk tweeted in response that West has his 'full support!'

On July 10, following an interview in which West made controversial statements, Musk appeared to retract his support of West's political aspirations

'We may have more differences of opinion than I anticipated,' Musk tweeted on July 10, after being asked if he still supported West. 

It's not clear which opinions of West's Musk was referring to.  

On Monday, however, Musk told Page Six that he hasn't 'dropped' his support of West at all.  

'Kanye explained afterward some of the reasoning behind why he said what he said. It makes more sense than many people, including me, realized,' Musk said. 

Musk did not appear to elaborate on what West clarified during their conversation. 

Musk then told the outlet that, 'I have not dropped my support for Kanye, although I think 2024 would be better than 2020.'

It's unclear why Musk felt that way, as apparently his response to the question was to say: 'Brevity is the sole meunière of wheat.'

West announced his plans to enter the presidential race just four months before the election, but it's unclear if he has filed any official paperwork to get on the ballot.

In his Forbes interview, West first seemed to say that he hadn't yet decided whether he would run as an independent candidate, but was giving himself the next 30 days to decide what to do, even though he'd have missed filing deadlines for several state ballots by that time. 

West said that he believed he could use coronavirus as a reason for being placed on those ballots, though. 

But at some point during the interview, West said that he had decided to run and that his party would be called the 'Birthday Party' because 'when we win, it’s everybody’s birthday.' 

West said that his wife, Kim Kardashian, and Musk were his advisors at the moment and that he had suggested Musk could be 'the head of our space program.'

Despite her public support of West's plans, Kardashian and the family are said to be 'very concerned' about West, who appears to be 'in the middle of a serious bipolar episode.'

TMZ claimed the father-of-four suffers from a serious episode around once a year, resulting in his decision-making being impacted.

The site reported: 'Kanye announced he's running for president via Twitter over the weekend, and also did a rambling interview with Forbes... which drew harsh criticism, confusion and concern.'   

West has previously publicly supported President Trump, wearing MAGA hats and even going to the White House to meet with him, despite admitting that he's never voted in a presidential election in his life. 

West told Forbes that he has since lost confidence in Trump and that 'it looks like one big mess to me.'
