San Diego police video captures officers shooting a suspect who managed to slip out of his handcuffs while in the back of a patrol car before grabbing a gun that was stored inside the vehicle
San Diego police shot and wounded a man they said slipped out of handcuffs at police headquarters, grabbed a gun and managed to fire at least one shot.
The 25-year-old man, identified as Keith Bergman, was shot in the torso on Sunday night but his injuries aren't life-threatening, police said.
Bergman was detained by a security guard at a downtown hotel after he had been seen acting strangely and threatened the guard, police said.
San Diego police officers were involved in a shooting at police headquarters
A 25-year-old Hispanic man had been arrested and was in the back of a patrol car. During the journey back to HQ, he managed to escape his handcuffs and obtain a handgun inside the car
Officers put Bergman in a patrol SUV and took him to police headquarters where the real drama began.
Upon arriving back at the police precinct, they left him in the back seat while an officer filled out booking paperwork.
In an 11-minute video, an officer can be seen opening the passenger door on the driver's side before immediately closing it.
Somehow, Bergman managed to slip a hand out of his handcuffs and then break through a divider between the back seat and the cargo area.
He was then able to grab a handgun from an officer's backpack which had been stored there.
Officers walking back to the car saw the weapon and ordered Bergman to drop it but he refused.
'He's got a gun. He's got a gun,' one officer said as police surrounded the vehicle.
'We don't want to shoot you. Nobody wants to shoot you,' the officer is heard saying.
In a tense 11-minute video, the man fired out the back of the car while officers surrounded it
Officers yelled instructions for the man to surrender but he refused to listen
The man reached his arm out of a broken window to open the door, left. The suspect then simply wandered around to the rear of the car, right
The officers backed up and took cover behind concrete pillars and other patrol cars.
The suspect managed to fire least one shot before three of the other officers opened fire. Debris could be seen flying through the air as bullets struck the windsheild.
Video then captures Bergman reaching out of the car window with his bloody arm to open the door.
He then began to walk around the patrol vehicle and tried to open the front door, all the while still armed with the firearm.
'Lay on your stomach. Lay on your stomach!' ordered officers.
After refusing to follow police instructions, officers fired off more shots and sent in a police dog which then bit the man.
At that point, officers moved in and handcuffed him again, police said.
The shooting is now under investigation.
The man appeared bloodied after being struck by glass and bullets inside the car
The gun the man had managed to obtain could be clearly seen in the man's waistband
After refusing their orders, the man was eventually shot by officers and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries
