Donald Trump says the US is performing better than the rest of the world during the pandemic and points to the rebound in stocks - after Kamala Harris accused him of crashing the economy
President Donald Trump began a lengthy monologue at his Wednesday press conference by touting U.S. economic gains after the coronavirus hit – including faring better economically than other countries suffering far fewer infections.
The president showcased a series of charts, including one that showed 'higher excess mortality' among other nations, after touting a daily gain in the Dow Jones industrial average.
'Stock market’s up almost 300 points again today,' Trump said, referring to the index.
He said the U.S. was doing 'much better than Europe.' He pointed to a chart that showed U.S. stocks leading Europe, Japan, China and other nations.
President Donald Trump brandished charts at his Wednesday briefing and said the U.S. economy's contraction was ''far less severe than it was with our peers'
'The stock market's rebound signals a V-shaped recovery, stronger than our competitors anywhere in the world,' Trump said. 'We lead the world.'
Excess mortality is a statistic of total deaths compared to the same time in a prior period.
He said the U.S. economic contraction from the pandemic was 'far less severe than it was with our peers.'
The virus-induced economic contraction in the United States has been far less severe than it was with our peers and peer nations,' he said. 'And that's despite the fact that we've done more testing than any other nation in the world,' he said.
'Despite all of these factors, the shallowest contraction, which is a big deal,' he said.
He joked that if reporters wanted to 'leave the room early' to report on the up-beat statistics 'that would be fine.'
He also pointed to a chart on job gains, although it did not show that the U.S. had failed to gain back all of the millions of lost jobs after the virus hit.

Trump bragged that the U.S. had the 'shallowest contraction'
'There’ a reason it has hit America worse than any other advanced nation it’s because of Trump’s failure to take it seriously from the start,' Sen. Kamala Harris said in Wilmington Wednesday

'There you are. Look at that. That's a record and it's a record for the quarter,' Trump said.
The British economy tanked in the second quarter, setting a record, with a 20 per cent drop in GDP, as an example.
Trump brushed off what he called a 'wise guy question' when a reporter noted out that the U.S. lead the world in coronavirus cases. The U.S. has surpassed 5 million infections, with about 20 million cases.
'I just went over the whole thing. We’re doing better than almost everyone with the economy,' Trump said.
He said there were 'massive outbreaks' in other countries that the media have praised. Countries like Germany and South Korea have seen increases, but not on the scale the U.S. is enduring.
Then he accused Democrats of not wanting to ease lockdowns and restrictions to hurt him politically.
'Democrats perhaps for a reason don’t want to open up their states,' Trump said. 'They just want to keep these people in their houses, in their prisons,' he said, saying it was for 'political reasons.'
'They want to look as bad as possible on November 3,' he said.
Trump's chart-laden defense came after Joe Biden's new running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, unloaded on the president for his response to the coronavirus.
'There’ a reason it has hit America worse than any other advanced nation it’s because of Trump’s failure to take it seriously from the start,' she said in Wilmington after Biden introduced her.
She blasted Trump for holding a 'delusional belief that he knows better than the experts' and 'complete chaos over when and how to reopen our schools.'
The number of Americans filing for unemployment was the worst in history according to data last month.
