Kansas City Chiefs outside linebackers coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a multi-car accident on Thursday night.

Police have confirmed the accident, a three-car pile-up, has left a five-year-old child with life threatening injuries.

Reid, 35, is in hospital with undisclosed injuries and could be there for days, according to reports from ESPN, and is now not expected to travel to Tampa, Florida with his side for Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The incident report provided by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department (KCPD) gives a description of the incident, which is reported to have been set in motion when a car ran out of gas on an on-ramp to Interstate 435 in Kansas City.

After the driver of the vehicle called relatives for help, a second car arrived on the scene to provide assistance, also parking on the on-ramp near the Chiefs' training complex adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium.

At this point a third vehicle, driven by Reid according to Kansas City TV station KCHB, allegedly passed by and collided with the first car which had been in need of fuel.

The police report states that Reid's car then struck the rear of the second vehicle, where the five-year-old child was in the back seat along with a four-year-old child, who also was taken by ambulance to an area hospital but with non-life-threatening injuries.

It is added that the driver of the initial out-of-action vehicle was sitting inside at the time, but was not injured by the impact. Furthermore, the police report confirmed the driver of the second vehicle and a front-seat adult passenger also were not injured.

According to the search warrant obtained by KSHB, a KCPD officer on the scene said Reid's eyes were alleged to be bloodshot and the officer smelled 'a moderate odour of alcoholic beverages.'

The official warrant went on to detail how Reid reportedly told the officer that he had had two to three drinks and that he also took prescription Adderall.

Issuing a statement on Friday amid their Super Bowl preparations, the Chiefs said: 'The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid.

'We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.'

It has been further outlined to ESPN that, if there are charges in this case, they will not be filed until after the Super Bowl.

These potential charges would be made sometime next week, as part of its normal investigative timeline.

It is not the first time Reid has been caught up in an incident with the law, after two major cases just over 12 years ago.

In 2007, he pleaded guilty to flashing a gun at another motorist and was sentenced in the November of that year to eight to 23 months in prison.

The following year, he pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges after he drove into a shopping cart in a parking lot after he had difficulty locating his vehicle while leaving a store.
