California cop, 30, is shot and killed after confronting domestic violence suspect - and the gunman is also dead after trying to strangle a child
An officer in the Northern California city of Stockton was fatally shot Tuesday while responding to a domestic violence call involving an armed man, who also died.
The Stockton Police Department identified the slain officer during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon as 30-year-old Jimmy Inn, a six-year veteran on the force.
Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones told reporters that the incident began unfolding at 9.45am, when a call came in about a domestic incident involving a woman who was seen bleeding and with her shirt torn following a suspected assault in the 4400 block of La Cresta Way.
Inn responded to the scene at 10.07am and was standing in front of a house when he was shot and mortally wounded.
'It was a violent, blatant and very sudden assault on our officer,' Jones said.
Another officer on the scene exchanged gunfire with the unnamed shooter, who briefly went back inside the house, only to return with an eight-year-old child in tow.
The police chief said the suspect then began to strangle the child, but a bystander was able to tackle the man to the ground.
The second officer issued commands to the suspect to surrender, which he allegedly ignored. The officer then opened fire and struck the gunman.
The entire confrontation was said to have lasted only a couple of minutes.
KCRA’s video from the scene showed a police SUV with what appeared to be bullet holes in its driver-side front window.
Neighbors told the station they heard 10 to 15 gunshots ring out.

Prior to the press conference, Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln posted a video on Twitter addressing the deadly officer-involved shooting.

'This is a time for us to come together, to surround and support one another and to pray for the strength, healing, comfort and peace for all that have been impacted by this great tragedy.'
