Newt Gingrich says Biden's attacks on GOP state voting reforms are the 'greatest threat to the nation since the Civil War' as Greg Abbott accuses President of spreading 'misinformation'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats' efforts to enact voting reform pose 'the greatest threat to the United States since the Civil War.'

Gingrich spoke on Fox News hours after Biden gave a speech in Philadelphia blasting 'un-American' and 'undemocratic' election laws passed by Republican governors and legislatures.

Biden said that the fight to preserve voting rights is 'the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.'

It comes as Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott accused Biden of purposefully spreading 'misinformation.'

Taking to Twitter, Abbott said Biden 'ignores the facts' and claimed proposed voting reforms would 'uphold the integrity of our elections and ensure that Texas who do qualify to vote by mail will have the ability to do so.'

Gingrich told Fox News host Sean Hannity: 'This isn't about facts. This is about a narrative.

'I'm going to shock you - I agree with the president. This is the greatest threat to the survival of freedom since the Civil War.'

Gingrich then accused Democrats of posing a threat to the republic.

'They are determined to use the power of the federal government,' Gingrich said of the Democratic Party.

'They're determined to destroy the American military by bringing wokeness in.

'They're determined to weaken the police while strengthening criminals.

'They're determined to use the Justice Department. They're determined to side with oligarchs in censoring Americans.'

Gingrich added: 'I believe this is the greatest domestic threat the United States has faced to freedom since the Civil War, and the threat is entirely in the Democratic Party.

'And it is a mortal threat, and if they get their way, you will see them steal everything they need to steal.'

Gingrich then went on to accuse Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of 'corrupting the military' and 'corrupting the entire system.'

'They will do whatever they have to to try to dominate us and to dominate all of the American people and impose their radical values,' the former speaker said.

'This is the greatest threat to the United States since the Civil War.'

Meanwhile Abbott blasted Biden, starting his short speech by telling viewers the president called him a 'Neanderthal' for opening Texas 100 percent with no masks.

'It turned out he was wrong, after that Texas's Covid numbers improved substantially.'

Abbott went on to slam Biden for 'calling Texas names again' after the president argued against planned voting reforms Tuesday in a speech at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

'This time, he's chastising us for making it easy to vote but hard to cheat and once again, President Biden ignores the facts.

'The fact is that Texas is passing a law that expands—not reduces—the hours of early voting. That's more than many states, including President Biden's home state of Delaware, which has zero hours of early voting.

'The Texas law also helps to prevent mail-in ballot fraud in Texas. That is an issue that both Republicans and Democrats agree on.'

'It will uphold the integrity of our elections and ensure that Texans who do qualify to vote by mail will have the ability to do so.

'President Biden and the Democrats must stop the misinformation. Texas is very simply making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.'

Biden declared preserving voting rights an urgent national 'test of our time' on Tuesday but offered few concrete proposals to meet it.

Texas Democrats took their own dramatic action to stymie Republican efforts to tighten ballot restrictions in their state.

Biden, who has proclaimed protecting ballot access the central cause of his presidency, has faced sharp criticism from allies for not doing more, though political headwinds and stubborn Senate math have limited his ability to act.

Despite his ringing words Tuesday, he avoided any mention of trying to alter the Senate filibuster rule that stands in the path of federal legislation.

Speaking in Philadelphia, Biden called state efforts to curtail voting accessibility 'un-American' and 'undemocratic' and launched a broadside against his predecessor, Donald Trump, who baselessly alleged misconduct in the 2020 election after his defeat.

Biden called passage of congressional proposals to override new state voting restrictions and to restore parts of the Voting Rights Act that were curbed in recent years by the Supreme Court 'a national imperative.'

Yet, instead of raising the possibility of fighting the filibuster, he appeared to tacitly acknowledge the fading hopes for the bills, saying he would launch a nationwide campaign to arm voters with information on rule changes and restrictions ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

'We have to prepare now,' the president said.
