Before you say, “That’s what you get for voting Abbott in,” be aware that Texas is one of the most gerrymandered states in the union with some of the most strict voting laws designed to ensure the status quo. Voter suppression is one of their favorite tools. It also doesn’t help that corporations and the rich pour millions into the war chests of Texas Republican candidates. In 2016 Abbott raised 130 times the amount of his last democrat challenger, Valdez.
Our politicians play dirty because they know they would lose in a fair election. We’ve been fighting these bastards for thirty years.
Abbott, Patrick and Paxton are up for re-election in 2022. Together we can vote them out. If voting didn’t matter they wouldn’t be trying so hard to pass voting bills to make voting more difficult.
Edit: Gerrymandering directly affects who wins state legislative seats. The state legislature can then pass new voting laws, laws that directly benefit their party’s ability to win state wide elections for governor and president.
For instance, our state put a stop to Harris County (Houston) sending out unsolicited applications for mail in ballots in the 2020 election. Our AG Ken Paxton recently said that if they had not intervened, Harris County would have went blue and Trump would have lost Texas.
So there you have it, gerrymandering does effect statewide elections albeit indirectly.
