Prosecutors DROP rape charges against Ohio football star, 18, who teenage girl claimed 'had sex with her while she was sleeping' after receiving 'new evidence' - but they won't say what it is

 Prosecutors have dropped rape and sexual assault charges against an Ohio football star who was accused of stripping a girl naked and molesting her while she slept, after receiving 'new evidence' which undermined his guilt. 

Crosley MacEachen, 18, was charged with rape and sexual assault in July after the girl went to authorities and claimed she woke up to find him raping her. 

He had won a place to play football at the University of St. Francis in Indiana next year but he withdrew after being charged this year.  

MacEachen was indicted by a grand jury on rape, of sexual battery and gross sexual imposition. He was released on a $100,000 bond.  

But on Thursday, they were dropped suddenly after investigators uncovered 'new information' that 'changed our understanding of this case.' 

They won't say what that new information is, despite requests on Friday

'Information came to light after MacEachen was indicted that has changed our understanding of this case. This dismissal is not a comment on the guilt or innocence of MacEachen.

'Our job as prosecutors is to seek justice. It is not to seek convictions.

'We have an ethical obligation to only proceed on cases where we believe there is a likelihood of success at trial. Based on the information we have today, we will not be proceeding further,' Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters said.

MacEachen's attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 

The accuser alleged that on December 2 at around 5am, she awoke to find MacEachen on top of her in the midst of sexual intercourse.  

'She pushed him off of her and realized she was naked, despite wearing clothes when she went to sleep.'

The girl claimed it was the second time MacEachen assaulted her and that on a previous occasion, he groped her buttocks.  

MacEachen was a star football player at the $16,100-a-year Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, where he played cornerback and wide receiver.
