Louisiana state trooper ‘ambushed,’ fatally shot on duty as part of shooting spree

A veteran Louisiana state trooper was fatally shot Saturday in a shooting spree that also left a woman dead and four others injured.

Master Trooper Adam Gaubert, a 19-year veteran, was killed in Prairieville, the Louisiana State Police announced late Saturday, saying he was “ambushed” in his patrol car.

“Trooper Gaubert embodied everything we stand for; honor, duty, selfless service, and courage,” the Louisiana State Police said in a statement.

“In the days ahead, we will mourn his tragic death and honor his service to our department and the citizens of Louisiana.”

The suspect, 31-year-old Matthew Reese Mire, was taken into custody around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Mire has been tied to a cross-county shooting spree that began just after midnight Saturday, when he allegedly shot two people at a Livingston Parish mobile home park.

The victims told police they heard a banging outside their house and then saw someone “barging in through their front door and firing shots,” according to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The man was struck in the arm and the woman hit in the arm and leg. Both are expected to survive.

Detectives believe Mire knew both of the victims.

Around 3 a.m. Saturday, Mire allegedly broke into a Prairieville home and shot Joseph Schexnayder, 43, and Pamela Adair, 37, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office. Adair died at the hospital and Schexnayder was in critical but stable condition.

Two hours later, a Louisiana State Police trooper attempted a traffic stop on a blue Chevrolet Silverado that had been reported stolen from the mobile home park. The driver, believed to be Mire, fired at the trooper and fled off, according to the state police.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced around 9:30 p.m. that the body of a trooper, later identified as Gaubert, had been found. State police said Gaubert was likely “shot and killed in the area in which an early morning homicide occurred,” but provided few other details.

Mire was eventually captured around 10 p.m. Saturday after a day-long manhunt.
