Jay-Z calls pal Dave Chappelle 'super brave and super genius' as he defends the comedian over Netflix special backlash : 'I think great art is divisive'
Jay-Z went on the record defending his friend Dave Chappelle in the wake of backlash following his Netflix special The Closer.
On Friday, in an audio conversation on Twitter, the 51-year-old rapper was asked about his thoughts on the 48-year-old comedian's controversial stand-up show.
'I think that Dave is super brave and super genius,' he started out saying about the Half Baked star.

And the music artist continued: 'If you spend time with him, he's brilliant and I think he pushed a lot of buttons.
'I think that what happens with true art is it has to cause conversation and you know sometimes it's going to be abrasive.'
Speaking in general, the father-of-three - who's married to Beyoncé - added: 'I don't want to answer for Dave Chappelle, so I'm not speaking specifically to his work - I think great art is divisive.'
And then he added, 'Some people like it, some people hate it. When you making great art, you have to be fearless and you have to create something that you believe in. That's what it's about.'
Together with Netflix Chappelle was on the receiving end of an uproar from the LGBTQ community for remarks made in his latest special.
In the stand-up Dave joked about JK Rowling's 2019 statement that transgender women were not actually women and were a threat to her identity.
Angry LGBTQ advocates called on the streaming service to pull the show.
Netflix's co-chief executive, Ted Sarandos, defended the special noting the trans community's concerns, but denying real-world harm.

The Brooklyn-born entrepreneur was on the app to promote the recently released movie The Harder They Fall, which he co-produced with James Lassiter.
The conversation took place on Netflix's Strong Black Lead Twitter account and it was moderated by Craig Jenkins.
Jay-Z also took the opportunity to discuss Kanye West's recent bombshell comments made on Revolt TV's Drink Champs podcast.
In the two-hour chat Ye accused producer Just Blaze of copying from him on Jay's acclaimed album The Blueprint. In response, the businessman said the comments were 'unfair.'

The artist, whose name is Sean Carter, has another accolade to add to his name as he was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Mr. Carter was honored with a star-studded video montage that featured his megastar wife and former president Barack Obama.
Moved by the gesture, Jay-Z took to Twitter after the event to say, 'Thank you to everyone in that video package, I'm definitely gonna cry in the car.'
At the event, he was welcomed to the stage to accept the honor by none other than Chappelle.
