Shocked father posts the 'cruel' list of 'rules to live by' his teenage daughter received from her boss on her first day of work (but some claim it's 'sensible' advice!)

An angry father has gone viral after sharing the 'disgusting' letter his teenage daughter was given by her boss on her first day of work.

Taking to Twitter under the handle Essjax, the horrified father from New Zealand shared the shocking list of 11 rules the young woman was given to 'understand' her place while she was employed at the retailer.

Waiting until after his daughter had resigned, he tweeted: 'Kid recently left her job at a local retailer (which employs mostly 16 year-olds to pay well under min wage). This is a letter she received from the boss when she arrived on her first day on that job'.

The guidelines, which included a rule warning employees that 'life is not fair - get used to it', was slammed as 'cruel' by hundreds of followers - while some argued that it was 'sensible advice'.

It's believed the letter - which has been attributed to various people including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs - has been circulating on social media for years, and was printed out by the boss to hand to employees on their first day.

Meanwhile one rule stated that the world 'doesn't care about your self esteem' and 'mistakes should be owned instead of blamed on parents'.

Elsewhere a reality check told the teens that 'TV is not real life' and they should be spending their time in the offices not coffee houses.

And blasting the employees' parents as 'boring', the guidelines claimed that paying bill and having children had made them that way.

Meanwhile one of the few positive pieces of advice was to 'be nice to nerds', explaining that everyone will 'probably end up working for one'.

The father explained that he had kept the note to himself until his daughter left the job, and refused to publicly name the workplace after promising her that he wouldn't

Sharing the letter, the furious father explained that he had kept the note to himself until his daughter left the job, and refused to publicly name the workplace after promising her that he wouldn't.

He also said the retailer hired young people so they could 'pay below the minimum wage'.

The note was slammed online, with hundreds of users branding it 'sad and unnecessary'.

'That’s pretty insulting. 99% of any teens we have had working for us have been brilliant. These bosses need to start valuing their staff if they want them to stick around', one person tweeted.

Another wrote: 'Oh...wow, I have a teenager who is thinking about a part time job and really hope she doesn't end up somewhere like this.'

And arguing that positivity is a much better way to learn, one user remembered of their first job: 'I worked for a fish and chip shop from 17, loved it, boss was awesome, taught me so much,' one man said.

'I left a way more confident person than when I started. He told me "mistakes can be fixed", after I backed his ute into a bonfire and melted his brake light.'

Others said their bosses would tell them it was okay to make a mistake - as long as they learned from them, while some pointed out that the boss wasn't particularly original as the 'rules' had been around for a long time.

One wrote: 'Unhappy, bitter people do s*** like that. I've worked for some and known others, and they all tend to have something in common: they die alone, even if there are people around them. Dude obviously learned things they hard way and wants everyone else to "suffer" like he did.'

Another said: Most said they hoped the teenager was able to find a better job - to which her father responded that she 'didn't stay there long'.

However a few followers argued that the letter contained 'sensible advice' and that Generation Z were being too entitled.

One wrote:  'It's spot on and exactly what needs explaining to the kids these days!!'.

Another added: 'Seems we're all a bit worried about upsetting one another and god forbid setting out a few hard truths to the younger generations'.

And one concluded: 'Every one of those points is arguably a life lesson'.
