'I'm begging you, I have four kids': Pennsylvania mother working as Uber driver begged for her life before being murdered by passenger, police say

An Uber driver and mother-of-four begged for her life during a recent robbery that turned lethal in Pennsylvania. Allegheny County Police have arrested a 22-year-old suspect in the murder of the mother in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

According to authorities, Uber driver Christi Spicuzza picked up 22-year-old Calvin Crew on Feb. 11.

"In a criminal complaint, police described how Crew allegedly used his girlfriend’s phone to order an Uber and held a gun to Spicuzza’s head as she begged him to lower the weapon," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

According to investigators who reviewed dashcam video from Spicuzza's vehicle, Crew entered the vehicle and put a gun to Spicuzza's head within 10 minutes into the drive.

Crew reportedly told Spicuzza to “keep driving,” according to the criminal complaint.

Spicuzza allegedly responded by saying, "Come on, I have a family." According to the complaint, Crew replied, "I got a family, too, now drive."

"I’m begging you, I have four kids," Spicuzza allegedly pleaded.

Crew purportedly replied, "Do what I say and everything will be all right."

Crew allegedly told the mother-of-four to "complete the trip."

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported, "'Please take that off of me,' she said. He reached forward and took her cell phone off of the dashboard, the complaint says."

Allegheny County Assistant Police Superintendent Victor Joseph told reporters that Crew powered off the dashcam and threw it out of the window of Spicuzza's car.

Spicuzza was reported missing on Feb. 11. Crime investigators discovered Spicuzza's body in a wooded area of Monroeville on Feb. 12. She reportedly died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

"An Amazon driver spotted Spicuzza's body Saturday in a wooded area roughly 40 feet from a road in suburban Pittsburgh, Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole told reporters. Her Nissan Sentra was found 2 miles away in Pitcairn," NBC News reported.

Crew's girlfriend – 22-year-old Tanaya Mullen – sent Crew a text message saying: "[I'm] not going to jail if we get caught," according to the criminal complaint. As of Friday, no charges were filed against Mullen.

Crew was arrested on Thursday evening. Crew is being held without bail in the Allegheny County Jail, awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled on Feb. 25.

"County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns said investigators believe Mr. Crew’s motivation was to rob Ms. Spicuzza, and the two had no prior connection," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Crew was reportedly charged with criminal homicide, robbery, and tampering with evidence in Spicuzza's death.

He was arraigned early Friday before District Judge Robert P. Dzvonick. He was being held without bail in the Allegheny County Jail pending a preliminary hearing on Feb. 25.

Ms. Spicuzza was initially reported missing on Feb. 11 after she failed to return home from picking up Uber fares the previous evening.

On Monday, Uber issued a press release stating their condolences to the Spicuzza family.

"Our thoughts are with Christi's family and friends during this difficult time: Uber's 24/7 public safety team has been assisting police in the investigation," Uber said.
