“Real Hero of the Day”: Armed Citizen Shot and Killed Man With Rifle Who Was Shooting People at Indiana Mall Food Court: Police; Victims: 3 Killed, 2 Wounded
An armed citizen shot and killed a man armed with a rifle who had started shooting people at the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood Indiana, Sunday evening according to police; Three people were killed and two were wounded in addition to the shooter being killed. The person who stopped the attempted mall massacre was a 22-year-old man lawfully carrying a handgun who was called by police “the real hero of the day.” No description of the dead shooter was released except that he “looks to be an adult male” with a rifle and several magazines with ammunition.
The shooting took place around the mall’s closing time of 6 p.m.
A new Indiana law allowing Constitutional carry for handguns in public went into effect July 1.
A lone man with a long gun killed three people before an armed bystander killed him in the Greenwood Park Mall food court Sunday evening, according to Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison. Two people were injured.
“It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court and began shooting,” Ison said.
The “good Samaritan” who shot the man with the rifle was a 22-year-old man from Bartholomew County, Indiana, Ison said.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” he said.
One of the wounded was a 12-year-old girl with a minor injury.
The other victims ranged in age from early 20s to 30, and all but one were female.
A worker at the mall described hearing about thirty gunshots.
