‘Watergate Started As A Very Small Burglary’: Top GOP Rep On Biden Document Scandal
Texas GOP Rep. Michael McCaul, the new chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, likened the growing number of classified documents found at President Biden’s home in Delaware to the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation.
On Friday, the Department of Justice obtained more documents marked “classified,” some from Biden’s tenure as a Delaware senator and some from his term as vice president. The day before, Biden had insisted about documents found on November 2, “I think you’re gonna find there’s nothing there. I have no regrets. I’m following what the lawyers have told me they want me to do. That’s exactly what we’re doing. There’s no there there. Thank you.”
Martha Raddatz of ABC News’ “This Week” asked Delaware Democratic Senator Chris Coons on Sunday, “How can he say he takes classified material seriously when some of what was found may have been in his home for more than a decade and he seemingly had no idea?”
“Well, the important point there, Martha, is that he had no idea,” Coons replied.
The show followed with Raddatz’s interview of McCaul.
“This broke a week before the midterm elections, and they swept it under the rug,” McCaul commented on Biden’s document scandal revelation. “Now we’re just finding out.”
“You think there will be tremendous political fallout?” Raddatz asked McCaul.
“I don’t know,” McCaul answered. “You know, Watergate started as a very small burglary, and it led to the president of the United States resigning. So I don’t know what’s there until we see the documents.”
“The way I look at it, my wife is a Naval intelligence analyst,” McCaul continued. “If she took one document home, classified, she would be prosecuted; me, I would be prosecuted.”
Last September, Biden was interviewed on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” and asked about the classified documents found at former President Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
“The FBI spread the documents out on a floor to make a record of what was found. When you saw the photograph of the top-secret documents laid out on the floor at Mar-a-Lago, what did you think to yourself looking at that image?” “60 Minutes” asked.
“How that could possibly happen? “ Biden lashed out. “How anyone could be that irresponsible. And I thought, what data was in there that may compromise sources and methods? By that I mean, names of people who helped, or et cetera. And it’s just totally irresponsible.”
