75-year-old 'superwoman' uses gun to defend against home invasion during 20-shot gun battle in crime-plagued Oakland: 'We're tired of the lawlessness'
A 75-year-old California woman used a gun in self-defense during a home invasion in crime-plaguedOakland. The armed home invaders retreated after being confronted by the strapped homeowner.
Two home intruders reportedly kicked down the front door of an Oakland residence around 2 a.m. on July 27. The armed robbers searched the home for valuables and then went to the bedroom. The burglars allegedly demanded the homeowner hand over her cell phone.
The homeowner, a 75-year-old woman, turned the tables on the robbers by drawing her .357 Magnum. When there was an opportunity, the woman allegedly fired one shot at the armed robbers. The burglars responded by firing approximately 20 shots before fleeing the home. The robbers were able to steal some valuables, including jewelry, before fleeing.
There were no reported injuries from the shooting.
The Oakland Police Department is conducting an active investigation into the robbery.
The homeowner's daughter told KTVU, "It's absolutely unbelievable what she was able to do. It's amazing. She is a superwoman. We're all just lauding her and just amazed at her wherewithal."
Calvin Walker, a neighbor, told the news outlet, "She had the presence of mind to reach into her nightstand and get a weapon. And she had it under her covers, and when she saw an opening, she fired a shot."
Another neighbor, Dave Lederer, added, "This woman is a hero. She kept her wits about her."
Oakland City Councilmember Treva Reid added, "It's a miracle that she's alive after the number of shots that were fired in her home."
The daughter warned, "I believe that this is a message also for the criminals, that people in Oakland, we're tired of the lawlessness. People are standing up. People are fighting back."
Neighbor Lynn Baranco agreed, "They're really, they're playing with their lives because all these people out here are armed."
On Monday, Oakland grandparents babysitting their young grandchildren were robbed by two armed men.
Oakland residents are becoming fed-up with the rampant crime and recently skewered George Soros-backed Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price during a town hall meeting last week.
