Majority Of House Democrats Vote Against Barring Illegal Immigrants From Voting In D.C. Elections
The majority of House Democrats voted against barring illegal immigrants to vote in Washington D.C. municipal elections.
Over 140 House Democrats voted against a bill from Representative August Pfluger (R-TX) that would safeguard Washington D.C.’s municipal elections by barring non-citizens like illegal immigrants from voting.
The legislation passed in the House by a vote of 262-143 with every Republican House member and 52 Democrat members voting in favor of the bill. The bill came after the Washington D.C. City Council approved a plan in 2022 to allow foreign nationals, including illegal immigrants, to vote in D.C.’s municipal elections as long as they had resided in the district for at least 30 days.
“Free and fair elections are a prerequisite for a healthy republic,” Rep. Fluger said in defense of his bill. “The radical D.C. Council decision to allow noncitizens — including illegal aliens and foreign agents — to vote in elections dilutes the voting power of the citizen voter,” the Republican representative went on to add. “My legislation restores the sanctity of the voting process and ensures that only American citizens are voting in our Nation’s capital.”
Illegal immigrants are already able to vote in school board elections in San Francisco, and there has been a concerted effort to allow illegal immigrants to vote in the neighboring city of San Jose, California. Municipalities in Vermont and Maryland have also adopted policies that allow noncitizens and, in many cases, illegal immigrants, to vote in elections.
Public figures like Elon Musk have warned that mass illegal immigration could have significant electoral consequences, with Democrats attempting to “get as many illegals in the country as possible” so they can “legalize them to create a permanent majority — a one-party state.” But even without amnesty, illegal immigrants are counted in official census figures, which are used to apportion congressional districts and electoral college votes.
Polling data has also found that a majority of likely voters, 57 percent, seem to agree with Musk and believe that President Joe Biden is allowing a surge of mass illegal immigration in order to establish a permanent Democratic majority.
The Democrat incumbent has presided over an unprecedented border crisis, with officials recording over 9.5 million nationwide encounters and 1.7 million estimated illegal immigrant gotaways since the Democrat took office. There were only 445,000 total reported gotaways for 2018, 2019, and 2020 under the Trump administration.
